Chiropractic is a natural, safe, drug free alternative to treat a wide variety of musculo-skeletal complaints and has been used by people worldwide since 1895. It is extremely common in the USA and Australia and has been growing in popularity in the UK. The National Institute of health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines now recommend manual therapy such as Chiropractic care to treat persistent lower back pain. Many professional sports people and top athletes regularly see a Chiropractor to keep them at the top of their game. Chiropractic is for everyone and the whole family can benefit from Chiropractic care from babies to grandparents.
Our aim is to help you move well and feel more empowered to live the life you want to lead. Perhaps you regularly play golf and every time you play your lower back hurts and so puts you off your game. We believe you don’t have to put up with regular aches and pains. We also believe that aging doesn’t have to mean losing the ability to do physical tasks. We want you to be able to say ‘Yes I can do it’ to life and help you continue enjoying the hobbies you love. Our bodies are capable of achieving a great deal in this life though they need care and attention to really thrive. This is where we can step in and help you to help yourself.
What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
If a joint in the body or spine is found to be restricted in movement or misaligned, the Chiropractor can assess and deliver an appropriate skilled movement to the joint which helps restore function and alignment. Further effects of an adjustment are muscle and soft tissue relaxation because of the effects on the nervous system. There are many studies which have been demonstrating the effects of chiropractic and manual intervention on the body.
It is usually very comfortable and often people report instant relief from an adjustment. An adjustment is just one effective tool that a Chiropractor may use. Other treatment options include; joint mobilisation, soft tissue stretching/ release and massage.
What will happen on my first visit to the clinic?
Firstly we will ask you to complete a health questionnaire containing questions about your current complaint, your present and past health status and your future goals and expectations. The Chiropractor will go through your answers with you and ask you further questions to gain a good picture of your current health. It is useful for you to bring the names of any prescribed medication and dates of any previous medical intervention.
A detailed physical examination will include blood pressure, temperature, breathing rate and a series of neurological and orthopaedic tests to rule out anything which will need medical intervention.
The Chiropractor will then perform a posture analysis and examine how fluidly your body moves. They will particularly be looking for any movements which are restricted or painful. They will ask you to perform some basic movement patterns and then feel the joints as they manually test them. The Chiropractor will feel your spine in a variety of positions specifically looking for any restrictions or tenderness.
Once the examination has finished the Chiropractor will explain based on these first impressions what they have found and what sort of Chiropractic treatment they recommend. If you and the Chiropractor are happy to proceed, treatment will begin and a future care plan will be decided upon. The Chiropractor will usually offer you some home care advice and prescribe some specific exercises especially for you.
People chose to use Chiropractic treatments to help themselves in a variety of ways. Most people begin with:
Relief Care: We focus on addressing the underlying cause of what brought you in to the clinic and aim to provide short term symptomatic relief.
Corrective Care: This begins when your major symptoms have improved. Treatments are geared towards improving muscle function and strength to make lasting spinal changes.
Maintenance Care: Regular treatments even without the presence of symptoms are useful to avoid relapses and to optimise your body’s potential. This is similar to visiting the dentist for a check up to help ensure the smooth running of the body and to prevent small problems from turning into anything more serious. The goal is to help you realise your full potential.
Our responsibility is to advise you on the best care plan to suit your individual needs based on our education, training and clinical experience. Your responsibility is to decide how far you want to go and to let us know how we can best serve you.
I came to Matthew after suffering from years of painful shoulders and neck and “tension headaches” (Doctors diagnosis). After a course of treatment, I am happy and report the pain almost gone and the headaches have disappeared. Thank you Matthew, I can highly recommend your methods and treatment.
I have a complex and long problem relating to muscles and spinal tissues. I find that Matthew has provided a more suitable treatment programme and has achieved better results than other medical professionals which has been both time consuming and expensive.
I have been seeing Matthew for a specific back issue. He is so gentle and kind and my back hasn’t felt this good in years. I like the exercises that he gives so I can also work at home. I’ll be coming for ongoing “tweaks” to keep me in shape rather than waiting until I’m in agony. Thank you so much.
Matthew has been a great benefit to me in keeping me “mobile” and helping to ease a lifelong back problem. The treatment and advice has been extremely helpful.
Wonderful man! Keeps me mobile and has managed to “un-trap” the nerve that has caused so many problems. No-one else was able to sort me out! Keep up the good work.
